A List of 500 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Wines

We have compiled a list of about 500 different Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wines (the list is at the bottom of this article). But first, let’s explain a few things about these wines.

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wines are produced according to stricter rules than those set for the basic Saint-Émilion wines.

Here are some of the rules that a wine from Saint Emilion must follow in order to be a Saint Emilion Grand Cru (ref):

The total yearly production of Saint Emilion Grand Cru wines is of the order of 150 thousand hectoliters. That’s 15 million liters, which corresponds to 20 million bottles of wine (the volume of a standard bottle of wine is 0.75 liters).

In contrast, the total production of basic Saint-Émilion wine is of the order of 45 thousand hectoliters (roughly 6 million wine bottles).

So there are about three times more Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wine bottles produced than standard Saint-Émilion wines.

There are about 500 to 600 châteaux that make Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wines. The exact number changes regularly, for several reasons including mergers (when one vineyard buys out a neighboring vineyard, and merges the two).

Among the many hundreds of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wines, there is the group of “Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé” wines. There are fewer than a hundred of these.

“Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé” is an official classification based on a rigorous evaluation process that involves a quality assessment.
